Herbert Calvitto

MEET OUR HOMETOWN HERO

Herbert Calvitto has lived in his Nottingham, New Hampshire home for 23 years. The house, built in 1987, faces significant insulation challenges. In the humid summer, Herbert and his wife use floor units for air conditioning, creating high energy costs; even with the AC, they still sweat due to insufficient cooling. In the winter, the family spends $2,400 on heating—they went through three tanks this past winter—and energy costs remain high. The home's roof often collects icicles and ice dams, a telltale sign of poor insulation.

Herbert enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1967 and served for 20 years. His father and all his uncles are veterans of the United States Navy, Army, and Air Force. Herbert chose to serve in the Air Force to avoid being drafted into the Army and to fulfill his desire to fly. He served in various locations, including Thailand, Okinawa, Korea, Kansas, and England, and was stationed at PEAS Air Force Base. After serving as an ammunition technician, Herbert was a communications officer for 17 years before retirement. The most memorable aspects of his deployments were the camaraderie and the opportunity to travel to places like Bangkok and Tokyo, which he couldn't have imagined visiting otherwise.

For Herbert, a hero is someone who performs an outstanding deed, whether it's saving a life or showing kindness. Winning the whole home insulation project would be a game-changer for Herbert and his family, paving the way for a more comfortable living environment and a brighter future. When asked why he shouldn't win, Herbert humbly mentioned that he doesn't consider himself a big hero, having done small heroic things, but he views others as heroes. This humility and his dedication to family and service truly make Herbert Calvitto our Hometown Hero.

READY TO NOMINATE A HOMETOWN HERO?

Active-duty military, reserve military, veterans of the US Armed Forces, and first responders are eligible nominees for the program, provided they reside within the service areas of USA Insulation in our participating locations.

Nominees must explain how whole-home insulation would make a difference in their homes. Hometown Heroes is a great opportunity to show our appreciation for those who serve our communities, and we are excited to bring this program to more cities across the country.
